THY WILL BE DONE

“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.”

An excerpt from the book by Sheila Wilkins

It is difficult as a Christian couple to know or second-guess the will of God. When we were discussing the possibility of enlarging our family, we brought our decision making to God. We spoke words of faith, and prayed fervently for guidance and blessing. With confidence we said: “We will leave it up to God, whatever He wills, is our will.”

We asked God for a child, a son or daughter - we even considered due to our age the possibility of birth defects, the known ones like Down’s Syndrome, mental retardation, blindness, and deafness. As a couple we pondered what we would do if God saw fit to give us a child with one of the ailments that every expectant parent secretly fears. We wondered if we would be strong enough to cope with the challenges of a special needs child.

We have cried and laughed throughout our lives. We’ve known love, joy and pain much like everyone else. We didn’t know then in our ignorance, that we would cry more tears, say more earnest prayers and suffer more depths of despair and anguish than we had known in an entire lifetime, and we began it by saying - “ Whatever God wills.”

“His will be done.” Now the thing about such a prayer as “Thy will be done” is that we often have very limited views of what God’s will could be. We cannot think beyond our own knowledge. We imagine all the possible outcomes and then decide we can live with “whatever God’s will is.” God however, is not limited to our puny imaginations. His will is far greater than anything we could dream of - both in trials and blessings. Once a person feels the fullness of what God’s will can mean, that simple little phrase. “Thy will be done,” can become a trial of faith - that leads to blessings unimaginable. God sees far beyond our vision. Our lives are mapped out before him. He knows exactly what we need to strengthen our faith and bring us to heaven. That is God’s priority – our eternal home. Nothing on this earth matters as much as where we will spend eternity. However, God sees even beyond that. He sees the lives we will touch, the hearts and faiths that we will influence. He uses us to bring good to others, so their faiths are strengthened and they too will go to heaven. God’s will is the master plan. When we say “Thy will be done” we are trusting that God in His wisdom will turn the kaleidoscope of life and even the worst of times will turn into good.

To live “Thy will be done” means allowing God to have control, even when it hurts. It means searching out God’s miracles and blessings through our tears and broken hearts. It means holding onto God with all our strength as our world crumbles beneath our feet. When our spirits are faint with fear and sorrow, faith uses God’s strength to carry on.

It’s learning to say thank you for what we are given and smiling as we let go of what we wanted. “Thy will be done” is the same as saying, “I trust” or I believe” and then showing that faith, by living it.
